New Justice Department Memo on Same-Sex Marriage

During a weekend speech at the Human Rights Campaign Greater New York Gala, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced his plans to issue a new memo today to Justice Department employees regarding same-sex marriage. This memorandum comes in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2013 decision in US v. Windsor finding part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional. Attorney Holder indicated that his memo will instruct all Justice Department employees to give lawful same-sex marriages full and equal recognition, to the greatest extent possible under the law.
